Winter landscape, Nivose, print, printmaker: Jules Guiette (signed by artist), 1862 - 1901, paper, etching, intaglio printmaking technique, height 316 mm x width 237 mm, landscape symbolizing winter (the four seasons of the year), A monochrome etching shows a snowy landscape with a foreground of sparse grasses and low shrubs poking through the snow, their dark stems and tufts rendered with fine, sketchy lines. The middle ground slopes upward to a rough, uneven terrain marked by scattered tufts and small depressions, leading to a stand of tall, leafless trees whose dark trunks and tangled branches form a dense, intricate mass against a softly textured sky. The trees vary in thickness and height, some leaning and interlacing their limbs, creating shadowed areas at their bases, while a solitary smaller tree stands apart on the distant slope. The sky above is filled with closely hatched strokes that give a grainy, overcast appearance, and the entire scene is depicted in delicate contrasts of light and dark with detailed linear shading.
