Landscape with oak trees near Wolfheze, Vieux chênes à Wolfhezen (original title), Sketches of Holland (original series title), print, printmaker: Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's-Gravesande, c. 1880, Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's-Gravesande, paper, etching, intaglio printmaking technique, height 170 mm x width 280 mm, landscapes in the temperate zone, trees: oak, Wolfheze, A sepia-toned landscape etching showing a calm river or stream flowing from the foreground toward the middle distance, with reeds and low vegetation along its banks. On the right bank a cluster of large, leafy trees with dark, heavily hatched trunks and branches rises above the water, their foliage rendered with dense cross-hatching and textured lines. The left bank is lower and more open, with low grasses and distant fields stretching toward a flat horizon. Fine, short strokes suggest clouds and subtle sky texture above the scene, and reflected lines in the water mirror the vegetation and reeds along the edges. The overall image is composed of detailed pen-like lines and shading on a lightly speckled paper background.
