Each portrait is an illustration accompanying the biography of an artist or scholar. Most of the portraits were produced by Nicolas de Larmessin (162), 93 by De Boulonois and a third by unidentified printmakers. This concerns an illustration on p. 321, part II., Person, Baldassare Castiglione, historical persons, portrait of a writer, A black and white engraved portrait of a bearded man wearing a large, wrapped turban and layered robes, shown from the chest up inside a bordered rectangle; the figure has deep-set eyes and a full curly beard, with detailed shading and crosshatching creating texture in the fabric and hair, and the surrounding paper shows printed decorative elements and blocks of text below the portrait.
