Brussels: François Foppens, 1682. The book was also published in Amsterdam in 1682 by the heirs of Daniel Elzevier. Each portrait is an illustration accompanying the biography of an artist or scholar. Most of the portraits were produced by Nicolas de Larmessin (162), 93 by De Boulonois and a third by unidentified printmakers. This refers to an illustration on p. 99, part I., Person, Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, historical persons, A sepia-toned engraved portrait of a man shown in profile facing left, wearing a close-fitting cap and a high collar with a flowing, draped garment, rendered with fine parallel and cross hatching; the man has short, wavy hair visible at the forehead and around the ear, a prominent nose, and a defined jawline, with shading lines indicating facial contours and the folds of the clothing; the portrait sits within a rectangular border and is surrounded by areas of horizontal line shading, with decorative typographic elements and a block of printed text beneath the image.
