Shellfish fishermen at Katwijk, print, Shellfish fishermen walk in the surf with baskets and horse-drawn wagons., printmaker: Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's-Gravesande, Netherlands, 1887 - 1889, Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's-Gravesande, paper, drypoint, intaglio printmaking technique, height 130 mm x width 267 mm, beach (landscape with figures, staffage), crustacean fishery, Katwijk (South Holland), A wide, pale scene rendered in soft sepia tones shows a shoreline with faint horizontal lines across the sky and distant horizon. Along the shallow water near the center-left a horse stands partially in the surf hitched to a small, covered cart, with two standing figures nearby and a smaller figure closer to the water's edge. Reflections and rippling marks appear beneath them on the wet sand. Further along the shore to the right, small indistinct figures move or work in the shallow water, and another horse-drawn cart or carriage is visible with more figures clustered around it. The foreground is filled with horizontal, textured strokes suggesting wet sand and sea wash, and the overall image is composed of delicate, sketch-like lines and muted shading.
