Landscape with row of birches, print, printmaker: Jerôme Tuyttens (signed by artist), c. 1850 - 1883, paper, etching, drypoint, retroussage, intaglio printmaking technique, height 201 mm x width 285 mm, A sepia-toned pen drawing shows a flat landscape with a foreground of marshy ground and a narrow winding path leading toward the middle distance, reflected water at the bottom edge, and low vegetation along the water's edge. Thin, leafed trees with tall trunks rise on the right side, their foliage rendered with dense, intricate lines, while smaller, sparse saplings and bushes appear on the left and center foreground. In the middle distance a cluster of low buildings with slanted roofs sits near the tree line, partially obscured by shrubs and distant foliage. The background is filled with layered, textured clouds and a broad sky sketched with fine, horizontal strokes. The scene is composed entirely in fine linework with varied hatching to indicate shadow, texture, and depth.
