Baptism of Christ, print, album page, book illustration, Print is part of an album., printmaker: Jost Amman, after design by Tobias Stimmer (possibly), 1549 - 1591, paper, woodcut, height 234 mm x width 174 mm, baptism of Christ in the river Jordan: John the Baptist pouring out water on Christ's head: the Holy Ghost descends, A detailed black and white engraving framed by ornate floral and scroll borders shows a group of clothed figures standing on either side of a central scene where two nearly naked men kneel and tend to a seated bearded man, their bodies rendered with muscular detail and flowing drapery. Behind them a row of robed and fur-clad figures observe, some holding books or gesturing, with varied facial hair and distinct period clothing including cloaks, collars, and hats. The middle and background reveal a sprawling cityscape of towers, domes, bridges, and clustered buildings stretching to the horizon under a sky filled with radiating light, stylized clouds, and a bird descending from a bright circular disk above. Decorative foliage and architectural elements frame the oval composition, and the foreground contains rocks, plants, and textured ground.
