Trees and low buildings form a dark horizontal band behind the column. Several groups of people are scattered in the foreground around the base, wearing period clothing including long coats, hats, and some with walking sticks; a few individuals stand alone while others converse in small clusters. The ground in front of the column is bare and flat with faint shadows cast by the people. A small animal lies on the ground near one standing figure. The sky above the column is pale and empty.
