In the midground there are wooden ramps and sluice-like structures with slatted screens and chutes leading down to the piles, and a few men stand on and beside these structures, one carrying a rectangular tray on his head. Narrow rails and wooden platforms run across the site toward the water, and small wooden sheds and workbenches are visible near the right edge. The calm water fills the background horizon, and the sky above is pale and mostly empty. The image has an overall aged, grainy, and high-contrast appearance.
