Laocoön group in the Vatican Museums, photograph, page, Vatican Museums, c. 1850 - in or before 1860, photographer, Vatican City, paper, albumen print, height 135 mm x width 98 mm, Photo after page 186., Laocoon and his twin sons are strangled by two serpents during the preparations for a sacrifice, A pale marble sculpture of three muscular male figures entwined with large serpents stands on a rectangular plinth against a dark background; the central older bearded figure rears upward with a strained expression, his torso and limbs tensed and one arm raised as a serpent coils around him, while the two younger figures on either side also struggle with serpents, one reaching upward with a contorted face and the other leaning back with an outstretched hand, a draped cloth falls from the shoulder of the right figure and the serpents wrap around legs and waists, the carved base shows layered moldings and a smooth front panel.
