Scattered piles of rubble and stacks of timber lie along the quay in front of the building, where scaffolding, ladders, and construction machinery with visible wheels and pulleys are positioned. Several men in period clothing stand or work among the materials near a large wooden gate set into the brickwork, while masts and rigging of ships appear behind the left side of the structure. In the foreground a stone retaining wall runs horizontally, with a weathered wooden post and lengths of timber lying on a cobbled surface.
