Les lavandières, Women doing laundry on the banks of a river, page, photomechanical print, photographer: M. Mittenhof, France, cliché maker: Rougeron, Vignerot et Cie, printer (person): Chardon-Wittmann (possibly), c. 1883 - in or before 1893, printer (person), paper, photoaquatint, height 150 mm x width 120 mm, river, laundering, A sepia-toned scene shows a riverbank with several women kneeling and bending over near the water, washing textiles in wooden tubs and basins; some garments and cloths lie on the ground and are draped over small wooden wringers and carts nearby. The river occupies the right side of the image, its surface reflecting the overcast sky. Bare trees and dense foliage line the far bank, extending toward the horizon, while the near bank is grassy and uneven with scattered laundry tools and wicker baskets. The overall atmosphere is quiet and focused on the washing activity along the shoreline.
