The man on the left is dressed in a South Indian hip garment (veshti, lunghi, dhoti) reaching to the knee, and a shawl (chadar) around his upper body. He holds his right hand up, index finger to his mouth. His hair is short, his moustache and beard are broad and full. It could be a laborer from South India. The man on the left wears a hip garment (veshti, lungi) reaching to the knee, with a wide wrap-around cloth as a waistband, over which is an open, collarless European shirt with long sleeves that reaches down past the hips. The left hand rests on the hip; with the right hand, he holds a bag or a piece of cloth. His hair is medium-length on the sides, short at the front; he has no beard or mustache, and on his head he wears a turned-back floppy cap (à la Phrygian cap). He is a Lowland Sinhalese or a Eurasian.
