Scowen & Co., Sri Lanka, c. 1875 - c. 1880, South Asia, paper, albumen print, height 279 mm x width 216 mm, plants, vegetation, A tall, slender tree with sparse, evenly spaced horizontal branches rises from the ground toward the sky, its thin trunk and delicate branchlets silhouetted against a pale background; in the foreground a large plant with long, pointed leaves radiates outward, surrounded by various smaller trees and foliage; to the right a dense, broad-canopied tree occupies much of the upper area, its textured leaves forming a dark mass; at ground level faint shapes of other trees and grassy areas are visible, with a small standing figure near the base of some slender trunks and distant small animals or figures near the right edge.
