La descente de croix, Bas-relief with the Descent from the Cross, from the cathedral of Le Puy-en-Velay, photograph, page, inscription: 'Bas-relief en bois appartenant a la Cathédrale du Puy.', number: 'PL. 22.', photographer: Hippolyte Malègue, France, c. 1850 - in or before 1857, paper, salted paper print, height 148 mm x width 188 mm, descent from the cross: Christ is taken down from the cross, usually by Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathaea who are standing on the ladders (both arms of Christ detached), sculpture (relief, sculpture), A rectangular carved panel framed by a molded border shows a group of sculpted human figures in draped clothing arranged around a reclining male figure with a muscular torso, his head bowed and one arm extended; nearby figures include standing and kneeling adults with beards and head coverings, an angelic winged figure leaning forward, and two small childlike figures seated close together; above them a cluster of cloud forms contains reclining cherubic figures, and a crest-like circular emblem appears near the top center; at the bottom edge a rounded vessel rests on a ledge and various cloth folds and carved details fill the scene.
