Ivory crucifix from the cathedral of Le Puy, Christ en ivoire, photograph, page, inscription: 'appartenant a la cathédrale du Puy.', number: 'PL. 19.', photographer: Hippolyte Malègue, France, c. 1850 - in or before 1857, paper, salted paper print, height 200 mm x width 124 mm, sculpture, the crucifixion of Christ: Christ's death on the cross, Golgotha (Matthew 27:45-58, Mark 15:33-45, Luke 23:44-52, John 19:25-38), A monochrome image of a crucifix with a carved figure of a man affixed to a dark wooden cross, the figure shown full length with arms outstretched and hands positioned at the ends of the horizontal beam, a loincloth draped around the waist with fabric folds hanging at one side, a crown-like headpiece on the head and a tilted facial expression, a visible torso with muscular definition, legs together and feet resting on a small platform at the base of the vertical beam, a small rectangular plaque above the head attached to the top of the cross, and an even textured background surrounding the cross.
