The machinery includes tall vertical cylinders, large flywheels, connecting rods, pipes, valves, chains, and ornate metal frameworks mounted on raised platforms with rope barriers around them. A sign hangs above the machinery area. A man wearing a jacket and cap stands leaning against part of the machinery near the left foreground. Rows of windows line the back wall above a decorative railing, and shelves or pedestals with stacked cylindrical objects are visible behind the machines. Various smaller mechanical components, wheels, and drive assemblies extend into the middle and right background, and there are crates, a stool, a draped cloth, and additional rope stanchions near the right foreground. The lighting creates contrasts and reflections on the metal surfaces.
