Harrington monument in the Cartmel Priory, Harrington monument, Cartmel church, page, photomechanical print, photographer: Alex Rivington, Cartmel Priory, London, c. 1870 - in or before 1880, paper, heliotype, height 179 mm x width 115 mm, interior of church, monument, statue, Lancashire, Cartmel, A tall stone archway set into a masonry wall surrounds an ornate sculpted canopy with carved columns and decorative arches; beneath the canopy lies a recumbent effigy on a tomb with carved panels, and above the canopy are a series of sculpted figures and ornamental reliefs. The stonework shows dressed blocks with visible joints and weathering, and the canopy features tracery, foliate motifs, and three-arched openings supported by slender columns; inside the openings a dark interior space is visible. The overall image is monochrome, with strong contrasts between light and shadow on the carved surfaces and the surrounding stone, and a narrow section of a wall and a recessed arched opening are visible to one side.
