In the square, uniformed soldiers stand in a line near the building, firing toward the center where thick plumes of smoke billow; several fallen figures lie on the ground near the smoke. Groups of people in period dress react across the foreground, some running, some gesturing, and one woman stands facing the smoke with an arm raised. Trees and additional buildings fill the middle distance, and small clustered figures appear along the street leading into the background. The image is rendered in fine engraved lines with detailed crosshatching throughout.
