Ode to the Flying Vessel of Daam Schijf, 1743, Ode to the Flying Ship, or new Post and Travel Machine, invented by D. Schyf, print, Sheet with an ode to and two small illustrations of the so-called Flying Vessel, a vessel named Volg My, which was supposed to achieve great speeds without sails, an invention of Zaandam grocer Daam Schijf. On June 20, the ship, with a wheel powered by five horses hidden in the hold, was launched into the Zaan where it sank. At the top a vignette of Mercurius., printmaker, writer (clerical worker), Northern Netherlands, paper, woodcut, letterpress printing, woodcut with text in letterpress, height 419 mm x width 284 mm, Person, Daam Schijf, invention, discovery, science and technology, ships (in general) (propulsion of vehicle, ship, etc. by animals), Zaan, Period, Aged paper sheet with printed illustrations and decorative elements, showing two rectangular engraved panels near the top each depicting a wooden boat floating on water beneath a lined sky, a small cherub-like figure holding a staff and a cloth positioned above between the panels, and a large area below filled with dense printed columns of text framed by ornamental initials and vertical decorative borders, the overall page featuring worn spots and a central vertical crease.
