The award-winning works turned out to be mostly by Brabant artists and, according to rumors, already owned before the exhibition by Baron de Ceva, aide-de-camp to Prince Frederik and member of the exhibition committee. Behind a counter stands De Ceva with a painting he is showing to an interested customer. On the ground to the left, a desperate Dutch painter is pulling on a scale in vain; two Brabant painters look on amused, one with bags of money in his arms. On the left a seated vendor behind a scale looks toward the foreground while another person nearby gestures upward. In front of them a figure kneels on the floor holding a bowl. Toward the center a man in a long coat and holding a hat stands facing a uniformed officer wearing a tall bicorne hat and epaulettes who is leaning on the counter. To the left of the standing man, another man wears a hat and cradles a small bundle. On the right, a seated woman in a voluminous dress faces another woman who stands beside her with a draped shawl. Background details include framed pictures on the wall, hanging garlands, and faint outlines of additional figures and objects. The drawing is framed by a rectangular border.
