The kneeling figure has hands bound behind the back and a bowed head, while a man on the platform in front of him holds out an object toward him. Two men peer from the doorway and others stand nearby on the platform watching. In front of the platform a dense group of people of varying dress styles and hats crowd together, some pointing or gesturing toward the platform and some seen from behind. In the background rows of multi-story brick buildings with pitched roofs, chimneys, and many windows form the urban setting beneath a sky filled with linear shading. The image is rendered in fine etched lines with crosshatching and detailed textures on clothing, faces, and architectural surfaces.
