On the monument a small portrait of Colonel Abraham Valentijn who led this action, with engineers, the Faam and two soldiers on guard., printmaker, Northern Netherlands, paper, etching, engraving, height 125 mm x width 85 mm, Person, Abraham Valentijn, battle (citizen soldiery, civil guard, citizen militia), Kattenburg Uprising, Amsterdam, Kattenburgerbrug, Period, 1787-05-30, An engraved scene shows a sculpted plinth topped by a framed portrait medallion flanked by two cherubic figures and crowned with an urn; a figure to the right of the urn blows a long trumpet with a small banner, while one cherub holds a pole with a hat and the other rests a hand on the lower edge of the medallion; two uniformed soldiers stand at attention on either side of the plinth, each holding a long musket; the front face of the plinth contains a detailed landscape vignette depicting a crowd gathered before architectural ruins and ships in a harbor; below the plinth a dog lies on the ground amid low foliage, and trees and shrubbery form a backdrop behind the central composition.
