Amsterdam: Johannes Allart, 1786-1811, vol. 16 (1796), between pp. 94 and 95, drill, military training, Patriot Era (1780-1795), The Hague, Binnenhof, Period, 1787-02-18, A large rectangular courtyard scene framed by multi-story stone buildings with rows of windows and arched ground-level openings occupies most of the image, with a cloud-filled sky above. In the open space, a dense crowd of people fills the foreground and middle ground, many wearing period clothing including coats, waistcoats, breeches, and tricorn hats, and several holding long, thin poles or staffs. A central group of uniformly dressed figures appears to be marching past the assembled crowd, and a flag with a detailed emblem is being carried among them. In the foreground, several individuals gesture or point toward the marchers, one figure leans forward reaching out, and a few dogs run and leap on the paved ground. The architectural facades show textured stonework, cornices, and pitched roofs with chimneys, and deep shadows fall between buildings creating a sense of enclosure.
