Marked at the top: III., printmaker, Northern Netherlands, paper, etching, height 90 mm x width 58 mm, Patriot Era (1780-1795), Period, 1786, A detailed black and white line drawing shows a formation of uniformed soldiers standing in ranks holding long muskets upright, their faces and tricorn hats visible, with one central figure in front gesturing with an extended arm and a raised musket as if commanding or demonstrating. To the right a lone soldier stands apart near a vertical wooden structure, holding a long pole and wearing a coat and hat. Behind the soldiers a dense background of trees with leafy canopies fills the upper half of the image, with branches extending across the sky and layered foliage creating depth. The ground in the foreground shows tufts of grass and textured shading, and the overall scene is framed by a rectangular border.
