(publisher) Haarlem 1837, original English edition (1836), illustration accompanying text on p. 185., slavery, serfs and enslaved persons, spreading the gospel, missionary work, reading to somebody, master, enslaved person, persons of African origin, A detailed black and white etching shows a dense leafy arch formed by trees and foliage framing a clearing where a crowd of people gathers; a central figure stands with one arm raised and the other holding a document, while seated and standing figures surround this person in various poses, some facing toward the central figure and others turned slightly away; the vegetation includes large trees with textured canopies, tall slender plants with long leaves along the edges, and a palm-like tree on the right, and the ground beneath the group is shaded with fine crosshatching.
