Witsen's portrait was a surprise for Kloos' fiftieth birthday., Person, Willem Kloos, portrait of a writer, A sepia-toned etching of a man's face and upper torso fills the frame, showing tousled dark hair, deep-set eyes with detailed irises, pronounced eyebrows, a furrowed forehead, and a long narrow nose; he has a mustache and a full beard with visible individual strokes, a slightly open mouth, and textured skin rendered with fine crosshatching; his clothing includes a collared shirt, a loosely knotted neckerchief, and a jacket with visible lapels and fabric lines, all set against a subtly scratched background.
