Drawing men, print, inscription: 'earliest state', printmaker: Nicolaas van der Waay, 1865 - 1936, paper, chine collé, etching, intaglio printmaking technique, drypoint, height 228 mm x width 173 mm, drawing-lesson, Amsterdam, Felix Meritis, A monochrome drawing shows three seated men in profile on curved benches, each holding a slanted drawing board. The closest man wears a tall hat and a dark coat, his hands resting on the board as he looks down. The two men behind him wear suits and face the same direction, one with his head slightly bowed and the other looking forward while holding a pencil to the board. The benches have cushions, and simple wooden supports and a small table are visible beside them. The background consists of vertical hatch marks suggesting a plain wall, and the scene is rendered with dense crosshatching and linear shading.
