One man stands with a cane across his chest, wearing a coat with a high collar and a hat with a rounded top, his posture slightly leaning back and his mouth open. The other man leans on a long cane, wearing a tall, floppy hat and a long coat with a sack hanging from his shoulder, his face gaunt and turned toward the first man. Behind them a dense group of figures seen mostly from the back fills the middle ground, many wearing hats and coats. In the background a large window or glass partition reveals faint, sketchy figures beyond, some standing and some seated, suggested by loose, quick lines. The drawing uses varied shading and line work to define clothing folds, facial features, and the crowded interior space.
