Farmhouse with hay barn (original title), print, Series number, 3, A farmer at work by a stack of hay next to a hay barn., inscription: '24.5-16.3.', inscription: 'Etching by AJ der Kinderen. Etched after a painting made by himself which was in the possession of Mr. H. Everts in The Hague in 1943. The etching was published as No. 3 in Volume II 1887 of the portfolio of the Dutch Etching Club. The copper plate was in the possession of Mrs. Witsen in 1943, whose husband often printed proofs for friends and with whom the plate presumably remained. Under the shelter a seated figure wearing a hat leans forward with arms resting near the knees, rendered with short parallel lines and darker shading. In the foreground there are textured piles of material or foliage suggested by swirling and layered lines. The background contains faint horizontal and slanted markings indicating distant forms and sky, and the whole image is framed by a narrow border of lighter paper.
