Church portal, print, People entering and leaving a church through a portal., printmaker: Antoon Derkinderen, 1869 - 1925, paper, etching, intaglio printmaking technique, height 131 mm x width 190 mm, parts of church exterior and annexes: portal, A sepia-toned etching shows a large interior space with tall, heavily textured walls and columns framing a central arched opening. A crowd of figures fills the foreground and middle ground, many clustered near the arch and along the sides; their forms are sketched with dense, short hatch marks and varying postures, some appearing to stand in groups while others face outward. Two figures stand more prominently at the right foreground, rendered with slightly clearer outlines and clothing details. The floor is depicted with parallel etched lines suggesting perspective leading toward the arch, and the upper wall surfaces display vertical and diagonal hatchwork that creates a sense of depth and shadow. Overall the scene is composed of fine linear etching, crosshatching, and varied tonal density.
