In the foreground on the left, several standing figures face the procession, some carrying long objects and shields, and a helmeted figure rides a horse visible from the neck upward. To the right foreground, seated women hold infants while other small children sit on the ground nearby. A cart with large spoked wheels is being pushed or pulled by figures near the center foreground. Further back, a dense line of marching, armed figures extends along the path, with standards or poles held aloft among them. Midground horses and riders advance along the route toward the distant valley, where the path narrows between steep, textured cliffs and rugged rock formations. The landscape features layered, striated mountain faces and plateaus, with a high, flat-topped peak visible in the distance and bands of cloud or mist wrapping around the slopes. The overall composition is rich in finely hatched lines and crosshatching used to render figures, garments, animals, and the dramatic rocky terrain.
