In the foreground a formation of uniformed men stand in rows with their backs mostly to the viewer while other figures cluster to the right, some facing forward and others in small groups conversing. A dog stands near a man holding a cane on the right. Behind the crowd a decorative iron gate with stone pillars opens to a courtyard framed by a multi-story house with a tiled roof, dormer window, and ornate facade, and adjacent smaller buildings. Two tall, leafy trees rise above the scene, one centered with a textured trunk and spreading branches, the other trimmed into a dense square canopy near the right edge. Spectators occupy windows and balconies of the buildings, and decorative urns sit atop the gate pillars. The sky is filled with soft, linear cloud shading.
