Lying monk in a church, print, book illustration (design), printmaker: Jan Poortenaar (signed by artist), 1896 - 1922, paper, etching, intaglio printmaking technique, height 160 mm x width 122 mm, interior of church, lying face downwards, A detailed pen-and-ink interior scene shows a large stone column in the foreground with a fluted base and layered stone blocks, supporting a broad arching vault above. Arched openings and niches recede into the background, with cross-hatching shading that defines curved ceilings and deep shadows. Steps and raised platforms are visible beyond the column, with an altar area partially illuminated and a draped cloth hanging nearby. A small human figure kneels on the floor near the base of the steps, and another indistinct figure is nearby. Tall, narrow windows admit bright light that contrasts with the darker, textured stonework. The floor shows scattered debris and heavy linear shading, and decorative molding runs along the tops of the arches. Overall the image is rendered in fine, repetitive etched lines creating tonal variation and detailed architectural texture.
