Harbour with tugboats in Rotterdam, print, On the right in the foreground two tugboats moored at a quay. On the quay a team of horses. In the background two cargo ships and a rowboat. Between the cargo ships a quay with houses. Seagulls are flying in the air., printmaker: Pieter Dupont, Rotterdam, 1898, paper, zinc etching, intaglio printmaking technique, height 138 mm x width 198 mm, harbour, A detailed ink drawing of a busy waterfront with a foreground full of small boats and dockside machinery, including smokestacks and winches, and a team of horses harnessed at the quay. The water is choppy with visible waves and many seagulls flying and floating above the surface. In the middle distance a lone rowboat with a seated figure is being rowed across the water while larger steamships and sailing vessels are moored further back, their hulls and masts visible against a skyline of densely packed buildings with varied rooflines. The scene is rendered in fine crosshatching and linework, creating textured tones and detailed patterns throughout.
