Houses by the river, print, printmaker: Arnoud Schaepkens, 1855 - 1904, paper, chine collé, etching, drypoint, etching and drypoint, height 148 mm x width 237 mm, landscapes with waters, waterscapes, seascapes (in the temperate zone), A detailed black and white etching shows a riverside scene with a small wooden boat moored at the water's edge in the foreground, reflected faintly on the water's surface. Behind the boat, a grassy and slightly overgrown bank rises toward a cluster of trees and shrubs rendered with dense, textured lines. Interspersed among the foliage are several simple houses with steeply pitched roofs and chimneys, their walls and thatch suggested by short, parallel hatch marks. Tall, leafy trees dominate the midground, their canopies drawn with intricate stippling and curving strokes, and smaller bushes and hedgerows fill gaps between buildings. The sky above is sparsely marked with light horizontal scratches and a single small bird in flight. The overall composition is framed by a thin border and conveys a quiet rural riverside setting through varied line work and shading.
