Maid with burning candle, Five etching proofs, print, printmaker: Pierre Louis Dubourcq, Netherlands, 1839, paper, etching, drypoint, intaglio printmaking technique, etching and drypoint with plate tone, height 170 mm x width 113 mm, maid, house personnel, chandelier, candelabrum (kindling a light, lit, burning light, lamp, candle), A monochrome etched image shows a woman standing and facing forward, illuminated from below by a light source she holds in one hand; she wears a simple dress with a gathered bodice and a bib-style collar, an apron with a pocket, and a cap covering her hair. Her face is lit from beneath, casting shadows around her eyes and cheekbones, and her other arm is held across her chest. The background is densely hatched, creating a dark halo around her that fades into lighter cross-hatched areas toward the edges of the image. The overall effect is high contrast between the bright central figure and the heavily textured, shadowed surroundings.
