Gathering of the Gods on Olympus, print, Numbered bottom center: Tab: XCIV., printmaker, after print by, Germany, Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki, paper, etching, height 186 mm x width 229 mm, The original print is part of a series of 96 prints published to illustrate the 'Elementarwerk' by the German pedagogue Johann Bernhard Basedow. The prints were produced by various artists based on drawings by Daniel Chodowiecki. In 1774 the collected print work was published under the title: Kupfersammlung zu JB Basedows Elementarwerk für die Jugend und ihre Freunde., Person, Johann Bernhard Basedow, the Olympian gods together: Jupiter, Juno, Neptune, Ceres, Apollo, Diana, Mars, Venus, Mercury, Minerva, Vulcan, Vesta (or Bacchus), A large engraved scene shows numerous partially clothed figures gathered on and above a mass of billowing clouds, arranged in a semicircular composition. Central seated figures include a bearded man with a draped lower body holding a staff and a woman beside him with drapery and a stafflike object, both flanked by other figures. To the left a youthful figure with a radiant halo holds a lyre while nearby a figure wearing a winged helmet and carrying a caduceus leans forward. To the right a warrior helmeted figure looks toward a group of women and children, one woman embracing a small child and others clustered closely together. Several reclining male figures in the foreground hold a trident and other implements, and a few cherubic children appear among the group. Detailed lines render flowing hair, textured fabrics, and shaded clouds beneath the assembly, with a horizontal lined sky above.
