The print is part of a series of 96 prints that appeared to illustrate the 'Elementarwerk' by the German pedagogue Johann Bernhard Basedow. The prints were produced by various artists based on drawings by Daniel Chodowiecki. In 1774 the collected print work was published under the title: Kupfersammlung zu JB Basedows Elementarwerk für die Jugend und ihre Freunde., Person, Johann Bernhard Basedow, the Olympian gods together: Jupiter, Juno, Neptune, Ceres, Apollo, Diana, Mars, Venus, Mercury, Minerva, Vulcan, Vesta (or Bacchus), A sepia-toned engraving shows a group of partially clothed and nude figures reclining on and emerging from layered clouds, arranged in a broad semicircle. At the center foreground a reclining male figure holds a trident while another figure nearby leans back with a shield and helmet visible on his side. To the right a bearded man sits with a draped cloth and a staff across his lap, facing a woman wearing a helmet and holding a round shield and spear. To the left of center a seated female figure with flowing robes gestures outward while a youthful figure nearby has a radiant halo around the head and holds a long object across the shoulder. Surrounding them are several other figures in varied poses, some embracing or seated with loose drapery, and one figure with a bird at the feet. Radiating lines and stylized clouds fill the upper background, and dense, textured cloud forms occupy the lower portion of the image.
