In the middle ground a small rowboat with a seated figure wearing a hat is being rowed along the water, with a simple dock or posts along the far bank behind it. Beyond the bank a horizontal fence runs across the image, and leafless trees with intricate bare branches rise above the fence, some with small birds perched among the twigs. Behind the trees are low thatched roofs and simple buildings partially visible, and the sky above is plain and unadorned.
