View of an ancient city gate of Rome, photograph, page, Rome, c. 1850 - in or before 1860, photographer, paper, albumen print, height 134 mm x width 97 mm, city-gate, A large ancient stone archway with weathered blocks and columns fills the frame, showing a rounded arch opening and a rough textured upper wall. The arch rests on thick supports with visible carvings and broken edges, and fragments of stone and rubble sit at the base. A cobbled street stretches beneath the arch, leading to a distant tree visible through the opening. Several men in period clothing and hats stand and pose near the arch and along the sides, some leaning against the stone and others standing on the pavement. The lighting casts shadows across the arch and the street, and portions of adjoining masonry walls are visible on either side of the structure.
