Five wet nurses, each with an infant, sketchbook page, A group of five women outdoors – one woman is sitting on the ground cross-legged, the others are standing. They are all wearing long wrap skirts (redda) and headscarves. The seated woman and the woman in the middle are also wearing Portuguese blouses with V-necks and long sleeves (hatte). The upper bodies of the other three women are uncovered. The seated woman has a child on her lap that she is nursing from her left breast. The four standing women each carry a child on their left hip. Two children can be seen suckling from the left breast. The children are of various ages – from baby to toddler – and are clearly not African. The drawing of the leftmost woman is not finished.
