Man sleeping on a mat on the ground, sketchbook page, A man is sleeping on the ground. He is lying with his knees drawn up on a wide mat (padura). Around his lower body he wears a loincloth (veshti, lungi) reaching below his knees. His upper body and arms are uncovered. A hole is drawn in the visible earlobe. The man is probably a laborer from South India and employed in Colombo. On the right of the page – below the lines of the mat and the ground – a faint sketch of a woman's upper body can be seen. The legs are extended with one foot visible and detailed toes and the other leg bent slightly; the face is turned toward the viewer with closed or relaxed eyes and short hair indicated by short strokes. Faint sketch lines and erasures surround the figure, including a lightly drawn secondary figure outline in the background, and the paper shows a textured, aged surface with small speckles and discoloration.
