Two laborers, sketchbook page, Two men outdoors in uneven terrain. The standing man on the left has his feet hidden behind a mound of earth. He is dressed in a knee-length loincloth (veshti, lungi) tied high around the waist. Around his head he has draped a shawl (chadar) that covers his back and shoulders, the end of which he has also tucked into his waist. The rest of his upper body is uncovered. He holds his bare arms folded in front of his stomach. The man on the right is squatting on a sloping embankment. He too wears a loincloth reaching below his knees and a shawl draped over his shoulders, upper body, and head. Only his feet and face are uncovered. In front of him stands a kind of wheelbarrow containing two objects. The men are likely from South India and were put to work in Colombo on reconstruction. One figure stands with arms crossed and a draped cloth over the head and body, the garment falling in folds and the torso and legs visible beneath the fabric. The other figure sits on the rock with a heavy, wrapped cloth covering the head and body, feet exposed and resting on the stone, and a bundle of fabric on the lap. The rocks beneath them are shaded with varying tones and the background is a pale, textured surface.
