With bent arms resting on his knees, he holds both hands against his chin. The man is wearing a mid-length loincloth (veshti, lungi), and the flap of a shawl (chadar) hangs over his shoulder. His hair, parted in the middle, appears to be short. The man is likely from South India or Jaffna and employed in the reconstruction in Colombo. The standing man on the right is wearing a buttoned-up short jacket with long sleeves and a pleated hem (hettaya); underneath, a loincloth wrapped in the Sinhalese style (veshti, and a high-turned waistband around his waist. On his left hip hangs a scabbard with a mid-length sword (kastane); the decorated hilt shows a bird's head. The man is wearing a cap, a short beard, and a moustache. He is a Sinhalese mercenary (lascorin), currently in the service of the Dutch. He belongs to the Goviya caste.
