Two sitting women, sketchbook page, Two women are sitting outside on the street or near their homes. On the left, a thin woman is squatting on a stone curb. A wrap skirt (redda) hangs around her drawn-up knees. She wears a wide, loose-hanging shawl around her upper body. Beneath it, we see her bare shoulder, neck, and bent left arm. The woman wears a cloth on her head, from which a knot of hair protrudes from behind (condé). On the right, a woman is sitting on an elongated block of stone, with bent knees. Her only garment is a foot-length wrap skirt (redda). Her upper body, with full breasts, is uncovered. She is likely a wet nurse (min). The origin of both women is unclear: possibly Eurasian, low-caste Sinhalese, or Tamil from Jaffna.
