Labourer and a toddy tapper, sketchbook page, Two men are standing outside along a road on uneven terrain. The man on the left is wearing only a loincloth (veshti, lungi), folded short and tucked in at the waist. An old, broad-brimmed hat (toppiya) hangs above his ears. This man can be recognized by his hat as a toepas, probably brought from Jaffna to Colombo for work. The man on the right is a Sinhalese palm wine tapper and belongs to the Duravo (Durava) caste. He is wearing a high-drawn loincloth (veshti, wrapped around the waist in the Sinhalese manner. On his right hip, he carries a large earthenware pot (labu katey) to collect the palm wine. The pot is suspended in a net of cords, with which it can also be worn around his waist. At the waist, the end of a bundle of tools is visible: a case with knives for scoring the coconut palm flower and a hammer (thalanaya) for flattening the flower. The sap from the palm flower ferments very quickly in the open air – the light alcoholic drink was called toll wagon or toddy. It served as a raw material for distilling arak.
