Three laborers, sketchbook page, Outside along the road are three men, as if they are posing for the artist. On the left, a man is sitting on a rock. He is wearing a loincloth (veshti, lungi) wrapped between his legs and pulled up to above his knees, and a second cloth (chadar) over his back, shoulders, and left arm, leaving his right arm uncovered. The ends of this cloth rest on his lap. The man in the middle is also wearing a calf-length loincloth (veshti, lungi), and a shawl (chadar) around his shoulders, back, and upper arms, the end of which is tucked into the waist. His upper body and both forearms are uncovered. A small straw is drawn in the raised left hand: probably a toothpick (dath katuwa). The standing man on the right is wearing a knee-length loincloth that appears to be draped in the Sinhalese style. Above that, the hip-length shirt (kamisaya) with long rolled-up sleeves. The two men on the left and in the middle are laborers from South India or Jaffna; the man on the right is possibly a laborer of Eurasian descent.
