The central foreground shows a larger ship with furled and partially raised sails, masts and rigging visible, and figures on deck leaning into the motion of the vessel. To the left a second ship with billowing sails and tall masts appears partially obscured by waves and atmospheric shading. On the right smaller boats with triangular sails cut across the water, their hulls tilting as they move. Dark, densely hatched clouds dominate the upper area of the scene, while the sea is rendered with textured strokes indicating waves and foam. A bold multi-lined border surrounds the scene, and the overall paper shows a worn, aged appearance with spotting and subtle discoloration.
