Beyond the foreground there is a calm body of water populated by numerous sailing ships of various sizes, some anchored and some under sail, with smaller boats near the shore. Across the water a built-up town with tightly clustered buildings and a few taller structures stretches along the coast, backed by low wooded areas and distant islands. The sky above is filled with layered clouds rendered in fine horizontal shading.
